Time Out of Mind

I think it may have occurred to me why a high school reunion - especially one so many years past the date of graduation - is such a mind out of body experience. With very few exceptions, these are people that you have not seen for at least ten - some twenty - and some, even thirty years. You remember them the way that they looked in 1978, and in the school yearbook, they are essentially frozen in ice - like the "Iceman" in the Timothy Hutton film from 25 or so years ago. So when you see what they look like now, it's a strange experience. They look the same, but at the same time they don't. And your mind (well, mine at least) has trouble getting its arms around that.
