More and more often on my drives to and from work each day, I see "In Memory of..." stickers or designs on the rear windows of cars. Usually, it's for someone who died well before their time; the one I saw this morning was for a young man who was born the same year as my oldest son (1990), and died earlier this year, just after his 20th birthday.
The mourning of a loved one's death is an intensely personal matter, but the growth of these types of "car memorials" mystifies me. Personally, I can't imagine what it would feel like to have the constant reminder, every time you looked in your rear view mirror, of what was probably the most painful moment of your life.
Maybe for the people who do it, it helps. I hope so.
